Welcome back! Team Fisher wishes all our subscribers a very happy 2023.
After a hectic year in 2022, we’re making some changes in 2023.
We’ll be taking a step back from woodturning club demonstrations this year and, possibly, next year too. I’ve not tallied up the miles we’ve done over the past few years but the tally of demos is around 100. In previous years, I took annual leave from work to enable me to drive Chris to his woodturning events. We’re both ready for a break and, hopefully, a holiday!
Chris will be continuing to focus on woodturning art, 1:1 tuition, public speaking and his filming commitments.
A new web presence
I’ve used this tool called Substack for several years. It’s undergone an evolution over recent months, adding lots of great functionality, with much more in the pipeline. I’m gradually migrating content from Chris’ WordPress website here. This will become Chris’ main web presence enabling us to share updates more frequently, log any media activity, and keep in touch.
In the pipeline are a Blind Woodturner podcast and subscriber-only videos.
Chris’ website remains live for the moment. Once the migration is complete, you’ll be able to access Substack via theblindwoodturner.co.uk. I’ll keep you posted!
Money for Nothing
Some of you may have found Chris following his appearances on the BBC1 show Money for Nothing. Thank you for joining us. And many thanks to everyone who has subscribed to Chris’ updates along the way. We are grateful for all your support.
Episodes 1 and 2 are now live on iPlayer. The final part of Episode 3 will be filmed on 20th January. I suspect that this episode won’t go live, though, until Autumn (at the earliest).
Meet the Woodturner
Chris is one of the Woodturners taking part in Meet the Woodturner 2023. A chance to see, not only Chris, but many of the finest Woodturners from around the world, demonstrate their skills.
Catch Chris on Sunday 29th January at 16:00 (UK time). He’s doing a collab with Baz Starkey turning an Egyptian dinner plate!

The Blind Speed Checker
Chris recently joined the local village community speed check team! You might wonder how a blind man could possibly keep an eye on speeding cars! Like everything Chris does, he finds a way.
He will be part of a team of 4 or 5 so, although not reliant on being able to see, Chris has tech that enables him to read text and numbers. He’s also 98% successful at accurately gauging the speed on passing cars! He was 1 mph out on one occasion!
There have been instances of people tearing through the village at 88 mph! Clearly dangerous, fast and noisy cars also distract Bamber, and can be nerve wracking for Chris as well. Being part of the speed camera team is Chris’ way of being proactive in helping to make the village safer for everyone.
This weekend Chris is working 1:1 with Nathan aka the Twisty Turner, helping him prep for his first club demonstration in February. The week after next we have a returning student here for the day turning a candlestick.
Thanks for reading. Keep on turning!
Nicola, Chris and Bamber
