Hi
Thank you very much for being a subscriber to our newsletter. We’re sorry we’ve been so quiet this year - it’s been quite busy - but we hope you enjoy this new update, and thank you for bearing with us!
what we’ve been up to!
We’ve had a busy year of demos and have travelled to Huddersfield, High Wycombe, North Wales (a few times), Birmingham, Scunthorpe, Devon, Basingstoke, Croydon, North Shields, Sittingbourne and Cardiff. We’ve been made really welcome in lots of different woodturning clubs and met many fellow woodturners. It’s been epic and we’re very grateful to the woodturning clubs for inviting us, and to everyone who came to watch, asked questions and spoke to us.
Chris has also been keynote speaker at a number of events this year including ShedFest (video coming soon) and Henshaws’ annual awards.
We also celebrated our first wedding anniversary - the photo above is of Chris in his wedding outfit!
but the big news …
After receiving a nudge at this year’s Makers Central, we started the ball rolling and applied to the Register of Professional Turners. Chris was assessed in the same way as a sighted turner and spent a morning with the assessor - being interviewed, demonstrating his woodturning skills and providing the relevant evidence.
About three weeks later, on a Saturday morning, an email arrived confirming that Chris had passed the assessment and had been accepted on to the Register. We did shed a few tears of joy that morning! It’s a big milestone in Chris’ woodturning journey.
This is Chris in his new smock with his RPT patches sewn on!
a new website
To mark this new chapter we’ve given the website a refresh. We hope you like it!
There are also some new videos and press coverage on the Media page that you might enjoy.
at home with the fishers
Earlier this year, we decided, just for fun, to start a podcast. Initially, just the two of us, it soon morphed into Maker Monday with a different maker guest most weeks, and more recently, we’ve added the gatecrash segment at the end. Anyone in the live chat can join us for an ad hoc five minute chat.
We’ve had really lovely feedback and have many loyal listeners. It’s been a ball and we love recording it.
If you’ve not yet heard the podcast, we’re live every Monday on YouTube - just search for At Home with the Fishers.
working with Matthew, Chris’ intern
We were very lucky to be approached by the University of Lancaster and offered an intern to help with filming and editing videos. Matthew spends a day a week with us and films videos in the workshop and on location!
This is one filmed in the Summer and shows Chris talking about the etiquette of approaching and engaging with a Guide Dog.
what’s next
We hope to catch up with some of you at the North of England Woodworking and Power Tool Show in November. We’ll be on the Tormek stand demonstrating sharpening on the T8, so easy even a blind guy can use it!
We have just a few more demos left this year - we might see you there!
Thanks for reading and subscribing to our newsletter.
Have a great October. Keep on turning!
Chris, Nicola and Bamber
